UTM-UNHAS Collaboration Enhanced Through Outbound Mobility Program

Representatives from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) participated in an academic visit to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS) in Makassar, Indonesia, on November 20, 2024. This visit was a component of the Outbound Mobility Program initiated by UNHAS to foster international academic collaboration and provide unique educational and cultural experiences for participants.

Delegation Composition

The UTM delegation comprised two third-year Bachelor of Science (Industrial Biology) students, Marsya Husna Mohamad Faizal and Nursyahirah Ibrahim, along with Dr. Nazrin Abd Aziz, a senior lecturer from the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science. Both students are active members of the Science and Technology Society (PESAT) at UTM and previously hosted UNHAS students during their visit to UTM in October 2024.

Academic Activities

The program commenced with an opening ceremony at FMIPA, where participants were welcomed by faculty members and local students. Academic activities included a lecture on genetic engineering delivered by Dr. Irma Andriani, followed by a practical lab session focused on environmental microbiology. These sessions provided insights into advanced research methodologies prevalent in Indonesia’s academic context.

Guest Lecture

Dr. Nazrin Abd Aziz contributed to the program through a guest lecture on his research concerning plant-made proteins, specifically an anti-toxoplasma immunoglobulin derived from Mucuna bracteata. His presentation prompted discussions among UNHAS faculty and students regarding potential collaborative research projects.

Cultural Activities

The visit also included cultural activities that allowed participants to explore the heritage of Makassar. They visited notable sites such as the prehistoric cave art at Leang-Leang Geopark, Fort Rotterdam, and the Balla Lompoa Museum. Participants were introduced to Makassarese cuisine, further enhancing their cultural immersion.

Collaborative Efforts

During the program, the UTM delegation engaged in various discussions and collaborative efforts, highlighting the significance of cross-border collaborations. The experiences garnered during this visit are anticipated to support future partnerships and initiatives related to student mobility. The exchange is viewed as a mechanism to strengthen academic ties and promote cultural understanding and cooperation between the two institutions.

Student Reflections

Student Marsya noted that interactions with UNHAS faculty and students expanded her understanding of research and the importance of cultural diversity. The visit concluded with a farewell ceremony, which signified both a rewarding week and the establishment of a deeper partnership between UTM and UNHAS, emphasizing the critical role of international collaborations in higher education.
