Curtin Malaysia Engineering Students Explore Industry Insights during Bintulu Visit
Recently, thirty-five students from the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering at Curtin University Malaysia participated in a two-day industrial visit to Bintulu to deepen their understanding of engineering practices. This visit formed part of the students’ tuition-free week, aimed at providing insights into real-world applications of their academic studies.
Industrial Visit Itinerary
The itinerary included tours of significant industrial sites, enabling students to engage with industry professionals while observing ongoing infrastructure projects. A key component of the visit was the guided tour of the Nyabau Water Treatment Plant, where Production Executive Ng Kok Hua provided insights into crucial processes such as water intake, purification, and distribution. This site visit highlighted the challenges and solutions associated with water treatment.
Enhancing Learning Experiences
Final-year environmental engineering student Jonathan Tham expressed that the opportunity to observe operations firsthand enhanced understanding of the complexities involved, marking it as a valuable learning experience that extended beyond textbook knowledge.
Exploring Innovative Construction Techniques
Another site explored was the construction area for the Jepak Cable-Stayed Bridge, where students gained exposure to innovative design and advanced construction techniques. Accompanying educator Dr. Timothy Ting emphasized the significance of such experiences, noting that they enable students to connect theoretical concepts with practical applications.
Insights into Industrial Practices
The group also visited Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn. Bhd., identified as Malaysia’s largest manganese alloy producer. Here, students observed modern production processes and learned about the company’s sustainability initiatives. Dr. Muhammad Noor Hazwan Jusoh pointed out that these field experiences broaden students’ perspectives by demonstrating how engineering can intersect with industrial efficiency and environmental stewardship.
Inspiration for Future Careers
Many participants found the trip inspiring. Final-year civil and construction engineering student Wong Sing Fong remarked on the impressive scale and complexity of large structures, noting that the experience motivated a commitment to pursuing a career in civil engineering.
Bridging Theory and Practice
Led by Senior Lecturer Dr. Paran Anak Gani, this industrial visit highlights Curtin Malaysia’s focus on equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet industry demands while promoting sustainable development. Dr. Gani commented on the importance of such field visits in bridging the gap between classroom instruction and practical application, thus preparing students to address real-world challenges effectively.
Commitment to Experiential Learning
Overall, this initiative underscores Curtin Malaysia’s dedication to providing experiential learning opportunities that are aligned with contemporary industry trends, thereby fostering a new generation of skilled and socially responsible engineers.
