Toh Ting Jii’s Journey: Embracing a Mother’s Love and Scholar’s Dedication at UTM

Toh Ting Jii has completed a Master’s degree in Educational Technology through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) program at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Her journey included balancing the responsibilities of being a mother to three boys, working as a part-time tutor, and committing to her studies as a full-time student. Toh also faced additional challenges due to her diagnosis of ADHD, as well as that of two of her sons.

Balancing Responsibilities

Toh reflected on the complexities of managing her academic responsibilities alongside parenting and tutoring tasks, particularly in light of her late ADHD diagnosis. She noted the importance of self-patience and acceptance of life’s imperfections, acknowledging that achieving a balance among her varied duties was challenging. By focusing on completing small tasks, she managed to sustain her academic progress, demonstrating resilience throughout her studies.

Passion for Education

Education has been a significant aspect of Toh’s life. Her enthusiasm for learning motivated her to remain committed to her goals, and she attributed her perseverance to her strong will. The flexibility afforded by UTM’s ODL program was crucial in enabling her to integrate her studies with her personal responsibilities, allowing for remote learning while managing household duties.

Toh recognized the impact of UTM’s advanced learning management system on her academic experience, noting its role in facilitating the integration of digital technologies in education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities. She expressed deep appreciation for her mother, who served as a primary source of strength and inspiration throughout her journey.

Additionally, Toh acknowledged the importance of her academic community, extending her gratitude to classmates and faculty members, including Dr. Noor Dayana, Dr. Farhana, and her supervisor, Prof. Zaidatun Tasir. Their support was instrumental in her achievements, which include publishing research in the Journal of Information Technology Education: Research (JITE: Research), laying a foundation for her ongoing PhD research.

Toh’s experiences highlight the significant role of education in transforming lives and emphasize the value of patience, connection, and seeking support during challenging times.
