Chulalongkorn University Wins BASF Young Voices Award for Innovative Cacao Sustainability Project

Chulalongkorn University has been awarded the “BASF Young Voices for a Sustainable Future” award, a program aimed at empowering youth to confront climate change through local sustainability initiatives. This marks the program’s inaugural launch in Thailand, created in collaboration with Junior Achievement Worldwide.

Recognition for Innovation in Sustainability

The recognition was given to a student team for their project, titled “Value Chain Enhancement of Cacao Based on the BCG Economic Model in Agricultural Communities of Nan Province.” The interdisciplinary team developed strategies to enhance sustainable cacao production while applying the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic model.

Supervision and Competition

The project was supervised by Assist. Prof. Dr. Tansiphorn Na Nan and Dr. Sudlop Ratanakuakangwan and gained acknowledgment among 117 participants from eight universities. Chulalongkorn University’s project was selected as a finalist from 13 proposals, alongside projects from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang and Khon Kaen University.

Practical Learning Event

Finalists engaged in a practical learning event at BASF’s Bangpakong site, during which they presented their sustainability proposals. The Chulalongkorn project was noted for its innovative approach to managing the cacao value chain and transforming cacao by-products into livestock feed.

Support for Sustainable Practices

As part of the award, Chulalongkorn University will receive funding and a six-month mentorship from BASF to further advance their project, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices. The initiative is also expected to highlight Thailand’s sustainability efforts on a global scale as it prepares for participation in an international competition. This recognition emphasizes BASF’s commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting sustainability through innovative projects.
