Celebrating Malaysia’s Unsung Heroes: Student Filmmakers Shine at UOW Malaysia
Recent developments at the School of Communication and Creative Arts (SCCA) at UOW Malaysia’s Glenmarie campus marked a celebration of student achievements associated with the initiative “We.R.Wira.” Launched in May 2023 in collaboration with Centriq PR, this initiative focuses on showcasing everyday heroes in Malaysia through a YouTube series aimed at promoting positivity and unity within the nation’s diverse communities.
Positive Impact and Student Involvement
The project has garnered positive feedback, illustrating acts of kindness that contribute to a culture of compassion across Malaysia. In their final project, SCCA students incorporated “We.R.Wira,” gaining practical experience relevant to their future careers in the filmmaking industry. Jacqueline Arnolds, Managing Director of Centriq PR, noted that the initiative was inspired by aspirations for a peaceful and united Malaysia.
Success of the Second Season
The second season of “We.R.Wira” included contributions from five universities, resulting in 16 notable video submissions. Under the guidance of lecturer Murina Pawanteh, the SCCA team achieved both 1st and 3rd places with their entries. The project titled “Within Our Own,” developed by students Tan Jun Le, Thanesswaran, Simon Lih, and Leonard Ho, secured 1st place. This video focuses on the efforts of the Persatuan Kebajikan dan Kesihatan Umum Malaysia (PKKUM) in Chow Kit, providing essential support for marginalized communities, including HIV screening and counseling.
Honoring Contributions to the Community
The entry that received 3rd place, “Empowering Lives: Good Samaritan Home,” was produced by Shuki Lim Chang and Winny Lim Yi Rou. This video pays tribute to the late Albert Ong and his wife, founders of the Good Samaritan Home in 1999, which cares for orphaned and vulnerable children.
A Commitment to Storytelling and Community Support
The accomplishments of the SCCA students reflect a strong commitment to community support and impactful storytelling. The winning videos from this initiative are accessible online for viewing.
