IMU Students Embark on a Transformative Journey into Chinese Medicine

In July 2024, four students from the International Medical University (IMU) participated in the Shanghai Summer School program, organized by Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM). This program offered participants insights into Chinese Medicine (CM), enhancing their cultural understanding and facilitating new connections.

Arrival at SHUTCM

The students arrived at the SHUTCM campus, which features a spacious and thoughtfully designed environment reflective of the principles of CM. The curriculum encompassed a comprehensive introduction to various components of CM, including theoretical classes, physical exercises such as Wu Qin Xi (Five Animals Exercises), acupuncture, and Tui Na (Chinese therapeutic massage). These academic elements were further supported by practical workshops led by knowledgeable instructors.

Hospital Visits

A key aspect of the summer school program included visits to two well-known hospitals in Shanghai, where students observed the integration of CM with modern medical practices. These experiences provided them with significant insights into contemporary healthcare approaches.

Interaction with Practitioners

During the program, students interacted with seasoned CM practitioners, enhancing their understanding of how CM can effectively complement conventional healthcare methods. Cultural activities, including crafting dumplings and making massage tools from mugwort, enriched their academic experience.

Overall Experience

Overall, the program allowed students to gain not only academic knowledge but also essential skills such as adaptability and cross-cultural communication. This experience underscored the importance of cultural competency in healthcare and the advantages of incorporating diverse medical practices.

Returning to Studies

Upon returning to their studies, the students articulated their appreciation for the educational opportunities provided by IMU and SHUTCM, noting the positive influence of this program on their aspirations in the field of Chinese Medicine.
