Dean of FEM IPB University Presents CIBEST Model for Poverty and Welfare at Universiti Brunei Darussalam

On January 22, 2026, Professor Irfan Syauqi Beik, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management (FEM) at IPB University, gave a guest lecture to students enrolled in the MSc Islamic Finance and Data Analytics program at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
The CIBEST Model
During the lecture, Professor Irfan presented the CIBEST Model, which aims to measure poverty and welfare through a holistic approach that incorporates both material and spiritual dimensions. This model serves as an alternative to conventional methods of evaluating the effects of economic policies and programs, particularly within the context of Islamic values.
Implementation of the CIBEST Model
The CIBEST Model has been in active use since its implementation by the National Zakat Agency (Baznas) in Indonesia, which began in late 2016. Furthermore, the Indonesian Waqf Board (BWI) has utilized the CIBEST Model in its National Waqf Index instrument.
Regional Development Planning
Additionally, the model is integrated into the indicators for regional development planning through the National Zakat Index (IZN), with its adoption reported in 13 provinces and 60 districts or cities across Indonesia.
Student Reception and Future Collaborations
The presentation at UBD was well received by students, who found the insights valuable. Professor Irfan also discussed ongoing efforts related to data collection techniques and calculations pertinent to the CIBEST index.
He expressed hopes that the CIBEST Model will continue to provide significant benefits and emphasized the importance of potential future collaborations with UBD.
