Cyber Security As A Focus Area – Students’ Best Experience And Education To Realise Their Potential

The advancement of digital technology in today’s world has brought about fundamental changes across many business sectors and functions. Whilst rapidly evolving and changing, the threat from cybercrime is becoming more prevalent and complex. The surge in cybercrimes has made cyber security a critical strategic priority in digital businesses and industries.

Realizing the significance of cyber security, UNIMY has risen to the challenge and made it as one of its six focus areas namely, Cyber Security, AI & Big Data, Coding, Business Technology, Internet of Things and Cloud Computing. The programmes at UNIMY have been developed to equip students with the opportunities to explore and engage in in-depth niche areas.

“One of the focus areas at UNIMY which is very much prominent today is cyber security. Due to the growing demands in the number of cyber security experts needed, especially in Malaysia, UNIMY strives to produce graduates who are talented and skilled in cyber security to meet the demand in this field.

“We want to make sure that the graduates produced by UNIMY are up-to-date and relevant to the industry demands. Based on the data gathered by Frost & Sullivan, Malaysia is growing its cyber security and approximately 10,500 cyber security talents will be required to suit the needs of the industry by the year 2020,” said UNIMY Dean of Academics Muhammad Amin Sahari.

As an ICT-niched university, UNIMY is determined to ensure that its students are nurtured and prepared to become all-rounders in the relevant industry. It is important that students in the cyber security programme are taught with the right curriculum from the beginning of their journey at UNIMY.

UNIMY is leveraging on technological solutions to adapt to the new circumstances of teaching and learning. Its academic members have been using relevant educational technologies in conducting online classes and giving assessments to their students, particularly in coping with the Restriction Movement Order (RMO) in March which unexpectedly forced the university to switch its mode of operation to online or work from home. Throughout these periods of uncertainty, the university, its staff, and students have shown their resilience and determination to adapt to the new normal.

“Future students at UNIMY can look forward to more courses of the current programmes to be conducted online, and there will also be full-online programmes where students no longer need to come to the campus. We are currently planning to develop UNIMY’s very own online learning platform and exploring various new processes and will continue to adopt new modes of teaching and learning,” said UNIMY Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Ts. Dr. Mohd Razali Muhamad.

“As a technical digital university, UNIMY will continuously engage innovative approaches and techniques in our teaching and learning. We will strive to meet our noble educational mission to become Malaysia’s Premier Digital Technology University, whatever future circumstances and setting we may encounter,” asserted Professor Datuk Ts. Dr. Mohd Razali Muhamad.

UNIMY has created numeours effective strategies and programs to groom students to become successful graduates, such as Field Trips to give a bird’s eye view of the industry and set the expectations for students upon graduation; Industry Advisory Board for the academics team, and the industry to discuss expectations, quality of delivery, and upgrades; Internships for diploma and degree students to attend during their time of studies; Career Talks where industry players, booming entrepreneurs, successful alumni and many more experts share their experience and wisdom; Student Internship Placement that guarantee relevant exposure in the industry; Real Industry Projects that are brought into the classrooms to allow students to learn and gain first-hand experience; Industrial Mentorship for Year-3 degree students to bridge and build a better connection upon graduation; and Career Fair & Resume Clinic for students to meet, greet and speak to industry players in their recruitment activities.

A UNIMY Alumni and Fujitsu Systems Global Solutions Management Sdn Bhd system engineer, Miss NurSyafira Jamil, commented, “In IR 4.0, IT becomes a significant key enabler. UNIMY is a good choice for future IT practitioners because it is not only focused on the technical skills needed in IR 4.0, but it also enhances the soft skills among students. As a UNIMY graduate, I am more confident with the skills and talents I have in my IT career.”

UNIMY encourages its students to take full advantage of everything the university has to offer to enrich their overall experience, respond to opportunities for self-development, and acquire stronger friendships and support networks. Studying at UNIMY means that students will be prepared to become ethical knowledge-worker and user, competent communicator and collaborator, as well as empathetic and empowered global citizens.
