PolyU and EDB Host International AI in Learning and Teaching Languages Summit to Transform Education

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is hosting the International Summit on the Use of AI in Learning and Teaching Languages and Other Subjects (AIinLT Summit) from July 4 to July 7. This event, organized by the Department of English and Communication in collaboration with the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR), and Hong Kong Education City (EdCity), aims to gather scholars, educators, and researchers to evaluate the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in education.

Summit Objectives and Opening Ceremony

The summit aims to provide practical skills training for educators, thereby enhancing the teaching and learning experience across Hong Kong and beyond. The opening ceremony, which included the first keynote speech and a panel discussion, took place at the Jockey Club Auditorium at PolyU and attracted nearly 1,000 attendees.

Keynote Addresses and Notable Figures

Notable figures at the ceremony included Dr. Choi Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government; Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU; Dr. Chan Wong Lai-kuen, Chairperson of SCOLAR; and Mr. Armstrong Lee, Chairman of EdCity.

Commitments to AI in Education

In his remarks, Prof. Jin-Guang Teng highlighted PolyU’s commitment to advancing AI in education, referencing the university’s efforts since 2022 to include AI within undergraduate studies. Additionally, he mentioned the establishment of the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, the PolyU Academy for Artificial Intelligence, and the Language Education Institute. Prof. Teng also noted plans for a new medical school designed to prepare future doctors for an AI-centric healthcare environment. He expressed hopes that the summit would facilitate productive collaborations regarding the integration of AI in educational contexts.

Significance of AI Integration in Education

Dr. Choi Yuk-lin emphasized the significant impact of AI on the future of education, urging participants to recognize the responsibilities that come with its integration. She stated that AI should serve to enhance knowledge, broaden accessibility, and create educational opportunities.

Keynote Address by Prof. Victor Lee

The first keynote address was delivered by Prof. Victor Lee, an expert in AI and education from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education. His presentation covered the complex applications of AI in teaching and learning, along with strategies for fostering AI literacy within the educational system. This session was followed by a discussion on the implications and challenges associated with the use of generative AI across various subjects, featuring insights from Dr. Julia Chen, Director of the PolyU Educational Development Centre, among other speakers.

Future Sessions and Workshops

The AIinLT Summit will feature a series of keynote presentations that explore how AI can promote interdisciplinary education, including language learning, STEM fields, and the creative arts. The agenda includes hands-on workshops designed to help educators effectively incorporate AI into their teaching practices, facilitating more engaging and personalized learning experiences that cater to student needs. Additionally, a technology showcase will highlight cutting-edge AI innovations from Hong Kong, mainland China, and other regions, providing opportunities for attendees to engage with innovators and educational leaders.
