Over 9,200 Students to Graduate at Makerere University’s 76th Graduation Ceremony

Makerere University has announced that it will hold its 76th Graduation Ceremony from February 24 to February 27, 2026, during which more than 9,200 students are expected to graduate. The event will gather scholars, families, and industry partners to commemorate academic achievements.
Graduation Statistics
The university plans to confer degrees to a total of 9,295 students. This includes 213 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, 2,503 Master’s degrees, 6,343 Bachelor’s degrees, 206 postgraduate diplomas, and 30 undergraduate diplomas. The gender distribution within the graduating class shows a significant change, with 4,262 female graduates and 5,033 male graduates. This marks the first instance in 15 years that male graduates outnumber female graduates in this cohort.
Recognition of Academic Excellence
Esther Ziribaggwa has been recognized as the best overall student in the Sciences, graduating with a Bachelor of Agricultural and Rural Innovation and attaining a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.77.
Government Support and Encouragement
Hon. Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, the Chief Guest and representative of the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, acknowledged Makerere University as a model institution that promotes leadership and academic excellence. Dr. Kaducu highlighted the government’s commitment to research and innovation, mentioning a USD 162 million concessional loan approved by Parliament intended to enhance the infrastructure for science, technology, and innovation at the university.
She encouraged graduates to consider themselves as potential job creators rather than just job seekers, urging them to embrace entrepreneurship and take advantage of government initiatives aimed at community development. Dr. Kaducu also expressed appreciation to the Mastercard Foundation for its ongoing partnership with Makerere University, which is focused on expanding educational access.

Chancellor Dr. Crispus Kiyonga advised graduates to apply their education towards societal transformation, emphasizing the vital role of research in community development. He acknowledged Makerere University’s consistent ranking among the top African universities, attributing this success to the collaborative efforts of its community.

Prof. Nicholas Ozor, the commencement speaker and Executive Director of the African Technology Policy Studies Network, reminded graduates that obtaining a degree carries a responsibility to serve and make positive contributions to society.
