Ewha Womans University Establishes National Research Laboratory for Multiscale Matter and Systems

Ewha Womans University has inaugurated the Institute for Multiscale Matter and Systems (IMMS), following a ceremony held on January 22 at Lee Sam-bong Hall within the Ewha Campus Complex. This institute has been selected to participate in the 2025 National Research Laboratory (NRL 2.0) program, an initiative supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Education. Over the next decade, the IMMS will receive an annual grant of KRW 10 billion, totaling KRW 100 billion, to advance integrated multiscale research.
Multidisciplinary Focus of IMMS
The IMMS focuses on employing a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses chemistry, physics, materials science, and artificial intelligence to foster innovation. Research methodologies will integrate experimental, theoretical, AI-driven, and data-driven approaches to address strategic national priorities, including next-generation energy materials, functional advanced materials, and intelligent systems.
Inauguration Event Highlights
The inauguration event saw participation from key figures, including Ewha President Hyang-Sook Lee, IMMS Director Hoi Ri Moon, and various representatives from governmental and research organizations. President Lee emphasized the importance of the IMMS in enhancing the university’s standing as a leading research institution and pledged support for fostering sustainable research initiatives that address national challenges.
Institute’s Vision and Objectives
Director Hoi Ri Moon presented the institute’s vision, articulated as “One Platform, Infinite Impact,” and delineated three principal objectives: achieving world-class research results, establishing a transdisciplinary research platform, and nurturing global scientific talent. Plans were also revealed for developing AI-based precision materials design technologies and an autonomous laboratory aimed at solving critical issues in climate, energy, and advanced semiconductor technology.
Commitment to Research and Innovation
The establishment of the IMMS signifies Ewha Womans University’s commitment to reinforcing its reputation as a prominent research institution while encouraging collaboration and developing talent in innovative fields.
