USeP School of Medicine Graduates First Batch of ‘Agila’ Doctors

The University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) marked a significant milestone with the graduation of its first cohort of Doctor of Medicine students from the School of Medicine on July 30, 2025. The ceremony took place at the Herminigildo C. Baloyo, M.D. Hall in Tagum City, coinciding with the institution’s 46th commencement exercises. This event has been recognized as an important occasion for addressing regional healthcare access issues.

Significance of the Event

USeP President Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales Jr. acknowledged the significance of the event, describing it as a notable achievement for both the graduates and the institution. He reaffirmed USeP’s commitment to training socially responsible medical professionals who can address healthcare disparities in the local community, in accordance with the Doktor Para sa Bayan Act (RA 11509).

Call to Responsibility

In his address, Gabales urged the new doctors to uphold their responsibilities, stating that it is essential for them to demonstrate daily that all lives hold equal value. He emphasized the importance of treating all patients with care and respect, regardless of their situations.

Congratulatory Remarks

City Councilor Ciara Uy-Salazar, representing Tagum City Mayor Hon. Rey T. Uy, conveyed her congratulations to the graduates. As the Chairperson of the City Council’s Committee on Health, she highlighted the importance of having a Doctor of Medicine program at a state university, suggesting it would enhance access to healthcare in the region.

Keynote Address

The keynote address was delivered by Hon. Priscilla R. Sonido, CCSO III, Regional Director of the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development Region XI, who spoke on the issue of healthcare disparities within the region. She encouraged the graduates to contribute to national development through equitable healthcare, underscoring the crucial role that they will have in improving public health.

Acknowledgment of Achievements

The ceremony also acknowledged top graduates and clinical awardees, with Jan Akkira Cheyenne M. Millan being named the Top 1 graduate and Most Outstanding Clinical Clerk. Richard Jan Jr. M. Millan and Kate Licca T. Ortiz were recognized as Top 2 and Top 3, respectively.

Reflections on Medical Education

Class representative Jan Akkira Cheyenne M. Millan reflected on the challenges encountered during their medical education and noted the parallel development of empathy and compassion alongside their academic abilities.

Conclusion of the Ceremony

The event concluded with symbolic rites that included the donning of academic hoods and the singing of the University Hymn, fostering a sense of community among graduates and attendees. Class President Krystal Gaile E. Anuncio led the Pledge of Loyalty to the Alma Mater, marking their continued connection to the institution. The graduates were officially welcomed into the university’s alumni community by Hon. Julius P. Borbon, President of the Federation of USeP Alumni Associations.
