De La Salle University Marks 50 Years of Transformative Education and Leadership

De La Salle University (DLSU) recently marked the 50th anniversary of its University Charter, granted on February 19, 1975. While the university has a history as a prominent institution of higher education dating back to 1911, this milestone emphasizes its influence in national development through transformative educational practices.

Significance of the Charter

Br. Bernard Oca FSC, president of DLSU, underscored the significance of the charter in expanding the university’s academic offerings and reinforcing its commitment to national service. He noted that the institution continues to cultivate leaders and changemakers who contribute positively to society.

Holistic Educational Framework

DLSU’s educational framework is characterized as holistic and rooted in Lasallian values, particularly in community service. Fritzie Ian De Vera, Vice President for Lasallian Mission, stated that service-learning is a fundamental aspect of the DLSU educational experience. The curriculum promotes the development of culturally aware thinkers, effective communicators, and socially responsible citizens, equipping students to address real-world issues faced by marginalized communities.

Transformative Educational Approach

This commitment to a transformative educational approach is reflected in various initiatives, including a student-produced documentary on artificial intelligence showcased in the I-Witness program, which explores technology’s potential to benefit society. Additionally, DLSU has been recognized by UNISERVITATE as the Service-Learning Hub for Asia and Oceania, incorporating this teaching methodology into all undergraduate programs. De Vera highlighted that these immersive experiences foster personal growth and empower students to become agents of change.

National Development and Research Initiatives

Beyond academic pursuits, DLSU is actively involved in national development through research initiatives and policy advocacy. The university plays a pivotal role in discussions surrounding educational reform, notably through participation in the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II), which aims to enhance the Philippine education system.

Civic Involvement through CONIC

DLSU also engages in civic involvement via its Committee on National Issues and Concerns (CONIC), actively involving students, faculty, and alumni in addressing pressing social issues. This engagement ensures that graduates are well-prepared for both industry demands and national responsibilities.

Future Aspirations and Sustainable Goals

As DLSU observes its 50th anniversary, the institution aims to further its impact in shaping the future of the country. The university is aligning its strategies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reinforcing its mission to promote sustainable and inclusive progress.

Dedication to Excellence and Nation-Building

Br. Oca expressed the university’s intention to enhance its influence through research, community engagement, and strong partnerships between academia and industry. The celebration of this anniversary highlights DLSU’s ongoing dedication to excellence, service, and nation-building as it enters the next chapter of its mission to develop future leaders for a better Philippines and world.
