A team from the Faculty of Law at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) achieved second place in the Best Combined Memorial category at The Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition. The team members included Diah Anggraeni Nurkhalisa, Anak Agung Gede Fabianara Danurwenda, Aurelliano Jovan Meydianto, Putri Ayu Mustikaweni Adhijoso, and Olivia Allika Balqis. They had previously won the national round held at Universitas Indonesia on February 15, 2025, which allowed them to advance to the international stage.
About the Jessup Competition
The Jessup competition is recognized as a significant platform for law students worldwide. It consists of two main components: written memorial submissions and oral pleadings, which address various pressing issues within international law.
This Year’s Competition Focus
This year’s competition centered around legal disputes concerning the Naegea Sea, specifically a case involving The Union of Ambrosia and The Republic of Rovinia. The UNAIR team addressed several legal questions related to the case, including the establishment of a regional organization, legal immunity regarding allegations of human rights violations by government officials, the effects of coastal erosion on maritime zones, and the legal rights and obligations of the international community concerning concurrent claims to a country’s presidency.
Challenges and Legal Complexities
The complexities of the legal issues presented significant challenges, requiring a comprehensive understanding of international law. A critical aspect of the competition involved determining the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in relation to the cases presented. The team skillfully represented either the applicant or the respondent, illustrating the necessity of connecting legal theories with the specifics of the case.
Preparation for Success
To prepare for the competition, the team collaborated with various well-respected law firms. This engagement helped refine their legal arguments and provided practical insights into the adjudication process, allowing the team to balance rigorous training with their final semester examinations. Support came from firms such as SSEK Law Firm, Assegaf Hamzah & Partners, and Ginting & Reksodiputro in association with A&O Shearman, among others.
Conclusion
This achievement underscores the commitment and skill of UNAIR’s Faculty of Law students in tackling intricate international legal issues.
